Knowledge is Power

Knowledge is Power

Heart beats fast, a ticking clock
Echoes in the cries among us
As we watch the crowd surround the block
Endless steps through frightening sneers
Walking tall and hiding tears

We marched, nine in all
The doors open but not welcome
As the troops escorted us down the hall
Hurtful taunts that could fill books
Little Rock Central High, an education
Brown vs. Board was all it took

Separate but equal was the past
But the danger loomed near
The fear and torment proved would last
Yet for that time we held true and fed our minds
With words, and numbers and reading rhymes

We were chosen to relieve our nation
Of fear, of hatred, of segregation
We lived and dreamed of world begotten
Of changes made that would not be forgotten
Nine of us in the midst of frowns
Turned the fate our nation completely around
