Knowledge is Power
As the bell rings and we take our seats,
I wait for that dreaded moment, when you speak.
I avoid eye contact, and keep my eyes down cast,
Please! Please! If you must, call on me last.
Why on earth do you keep calling on me?
You know I didn’t study last night or read.
Do you like hearing my voice crack or the way I stutter?
I make up an answer and wait for your rebuttal.
When I hear my name yet again coming out of your mouth,
We both realize this conversation will quickly go south.
We dance this same dance, day after day
Nothing changes, so why do we play?
If there is a lesson, you are trying to teach me
Then change your tactic and maybe you can reach me.
The next day as I waited for the teacher to call my name
I was calm and collected and ready to play her game.
Last night I learned a thing or two,
I opened my book and read for a few.
I walked in the room and met her gaze squarely,
Knowledge is power and this was my hour.
I was armed and ready for battle as our eyes met
Little did I know there was to be no contest.
