Labels
Labels
They'll try to label you
White or black; lesbian or gay
Their tags don't mean anything
Or at least they shouldn't
And yet, because of pressures to conform
To some sort of social norm
So-called standards for who you have to be
Placed into very distinct and separate categories
Trapped in by their expectations
Tied down by their assumptions
Trying to be who they think you are
But also trying to let them see just who you are.
There's a courage that's kept you strong
That has built up inside for so long
To let you break free of these restraints
But is yet again thwarted by their constraints
No, no more labels
Sure, one can arrange people into groups
But don't forget groups are made up of individuals
And not one individual is exactly the same
We're a lot like snowflakes falling from the sky
But we don't have to fall, we can fly
Forget the labels and ignore the spite
Be true to yourself and take flight.
