Labels

Four years ago,

I was labeled as

An unmotivated, lazy,

Less-intellectual-than-average kid.

I was .01 standad deviations

From the mean on the side I didn't want to be on and as that

Slice was made on the bell-curve, like cake,

My friends were on one side

I was on the other

And I felt alone, and stupid.

I was seen a less than average

I was labeled as a kid with no real thirst for knowledge.

I saw myself as that label--what others saw when they looked at me.

I was the biggest pessimist and I put myself down and blamed myself for that one mistake--

For being less than what I wanted to be by a point.

I looked in the mirror, and didn't like what I saw--or the person I was becoming.

It was then that I made a promise to myself--a promise which as become something very close

To my heart--and that promise has become my reason to change.

It is the reason why I am the woman I am today, and not the girl from the past.

I promised myself that I would put in as much hard work and effort it took to get into classes that better satisfied my thirst for knowledge

So, it was at that culminating point in my life, that I was forever changed,

And that promise to myself is still in place today

And I am the picturesque version of optimism and hardwork.

It took me the journey from the depths of hell, to where I am now, above the clouds, to figure out

That we all have the power of controlling our own image,

And what we want to do in life.

We can defy the odds or accept them, the choice is ours.

If I could get rid of anything, I would get rid of labels--prejudices that a person does not take the

Time to get past and really get to know a person.

I was inhibited by my peers' short-sighted view of me.

They saw the surface that my friends had scratched to see the real me

If everyone took the time to scratch the surface of others,

The could see one another for who they are--

Not who they pretend to be

Or who they are percieved s being.
