To Last
If time stood still, and I returned
to a place I always dream,
could I forget the past, lose the present,
for a future light once did gleam?
The trouble is this: it never lasts-
in the day I'm always caught,
for at night I return to the past I yearn
and the dream I've always sought.
My smile lies; I hide it well,
and you see only what I care,
but read my eyes and seek this truth:
there is no one this pain did spare.
A life without love is nothing to live
but has everything you can choose.
Beware of the clouds that follow before;
Cling to only what you can afford to lose.
I once met a man who held the world,
and I loved so hopelessly,
yet there came a day with nothing to last
because I was no longer his Annabel Lee.
