The Last of Mankind

It was a chill, average day in Chicago, with a 15 year old high schooler name Kimberly Pearce, and she goes to Curie Metropolitan High School with her bestie, Riley Steele and many other good people. On this somewhat mundane Tuesday, she goes to her 5th period like normal for Human Anatomy with Mr. Lee, but suddenly, something out of the ordinary occurs, then a worldly chaotic event begins......

"Class! Turn to page fifty-three," said my teacher Mr. Lee

As my teacher goes to the restroom, long moments later

He comes back to the class,

Looking disoriented and fleshy

I start to think, is this all just a dream?

As Mr. Lee's screeching and croaking approaches all the students

As all the students started to flee, I grabbed my bestie

But as we dashed, I started to think, is this all just a dream?

As Riley and I searched for the safe zone

The horde of the brain-hungry from school started to chase us

We were so blown, but we were not alone

As a few more fellow survivors, came along to endure with us

As the few of us located an abandoned car

We quickly made our way to drive to the city

But as I turned the radio station on full volume

It announced that there was a virus outbreak, now that's bizarre

We continued to drive in the city, trying to stay calm

But then we got stopped and stuck in traffic

As people honked their horns in impatience

A horde of fleshy beings came and snatched people out their cars,

How tragic

Our group got shook up, so we drifted away

But out of no where, the city bus rammed into us

After we blacked out, we woke up to escape the burning car

To follow the crowd of running survivors, to breakaway

As me and my team started to run, all I could think of....BOOM!

"Oh my gosh!" I said as an explosion and crash startled all people

As the major explosion started to flare, the flesh mob awaits and runs all people down, oh how they dare....

Is this all just a dream?!?

"Safety in numbers, safety in numbers, safety in numbers..."

That's all my crew could think of, so without hesitating

We were cool with other survivors joining us to underground path

But further we ran, more the undead would unleash their wrath

We decided to fight of the flesh eating horde

The people scrapped up shards and machetes, so we could gore

We made concoctions of grenades and Molotov cocktail gins

And then it was declared- LET THE APOCALYPSE BEGIN!!!

The community scrambled for supplies and ammo

In Chicago, as explosives continued to blow

I gave my team the founded guns without doubt

But I demanded that they make every shot count

With breaking PSAs, it's official that there's reckless zombies

The infected attacked us humans like a bunch of kamikazes

However all the people and we, kept fighting and purged

All mayhem and bullets flying, like shots heard around the world

After we wiped out half the horde, all headed to the underground

The only way to make it home was to reach for downtown

All of us fleed without looking back, but we all saw our parents

We dashed to them and said, "Gather all things, time to getaway in the Cadillac!"

"NO TIME FOR WORDS, LET'S BOUNCE!" Said my dad

All families hopped in their cars to get out the state

As we got in the car, I started to rethink my fate

But then the emergency broadcast started to announce...

*Siren* *Siren*

This is your National Emergency Broadcast System, please standby for further information. This is not a test. I repeat, this is not a test. We have been notified that a highly contagious virus has been released in the atmosphere of the city of Chicago. This highly contagious disease has been released after a biological bomb was detonated in the Central Side of Chicago near the metropolitan area. There have been an increasing amount of reports of citizens getting infected with this deadly virus. It is also believed to be spreadable by a bite, scratch or airborne toxins. This is a virus that may kill you. However, if death does not occur, the following symptoms may take part: Migraines, confusions, hallucinations, lack of balance and coordination, vomiting, necrosis, severe hemorrhage, and seizures. It is reported that people that have been infected have a drastic change in behavior and start becoming violent and cannibalistic. People have already been attacked by the infected and the virus is spreading rapidly in Cook County, Chicago's most populated metropolitan division. This virus is rapidly spreading across the United States as well, starting with Illinois up and around the other states East and West of it. If you are anywhere near the metropolitan area, you must evacuate immediately. Military Personnel will guide you to the safe zone and bordered quarantine zones. If you know a loved one that has been infected, contact the Disease Control Center right away- Do not approach them as you will be at high risk of contraction. A major national

pandemic has been declared in major cities all across the country. Stay safe, take precautions, and may God be with you all....

*Beep* *Beep*

In silence and shock, all I could think of, was this all just a dream?

Tension, panic and adrenaline pumping through my bloodstream

After all the chaos I've seen and heard

My mind is blurred, but it's summer - July the 3rd

After we drift, we spot and stop at the community safe house

My parents, team and all other survivors started to gather

All the guns, melees and explosives became ours

We promised to survive, so we became apocalyptic slashers

This is a very dangerous journey

Life flashed before my eyes

All survivors became smugglers towards other survivors

They are my allies, but smuggling is another havoc in disguise

It was true....this is all not a dream, it's a real life nightmare

As we headed west across the U.S., there were bandits, hunters, infected and military, all which I could not bare

Constantly getting shot at, attacked, I was scared but aware

We made it through greatly, only because of my prayers

After all the four seasons of going through chaos

We finally met the safe zone of our fellow survivors

We gave some goods as promised and we met families as well

But all of us had some wild stories to tell, and then we said farewell....

Before many years later, it was officially recognized that the deadly zombie virus was from a form of  not only neurotoxins and radiation, but also from the Cordyceps fungus and toxoplasmosa gondii, a deadly parasite that has spread around. Even though it

seemed like the last of us, since majority of the U.S. population has dropped dramatically, Kimberly, Riley, their families and many other survivors are still left and still surviving well in a broke down society. They just all continue to struggle but strive in a post-apocalyptic world......

TWENTY YEARS LATER

Ohhh dear, 35 year old me

Still with my family, team, and bestie

As the country was in peril, now its mostly wiped out

Infected are growing stronger and stronger, no time to back out

So are these so-called flesh eating zombies real?

I say yes with no stress, I'm glad I don't have to guess

So was this all JUST a dream?

I say no, but it was a realistic nightmare, I wish it would go

With all our might, we still see doom in sight

I'm not a kid anymore, so I lost most of my fright

Even if I don't know what's next

I'm know we're ALL scheduled for another war to fight....

TO BE CONTINUED.....
