The Leap

Before I jump I reach for a parachute Buckling every strap tight against me The comfort is there But so is the fear So I wait until the ground is closer The wind teases me Its false promises whisper in my ear So I wait until the ground is closer My stomach drops before I do I need to find it before I leap So I wait until the ground is closer It’s getting hard to breathe The air is thin up here So I wait until the ground is closer I see others jumping But I don’t want to be seen as a follower So I wait until the ground is closer The sun went behind a cloud I don’t want to do this in the dark So I wait until the ground is closer The fear and wind are gone The sun is out and I can breathe The ground is close enough I leap I fall And the ground is getting closer The fear is replaced Replaced by exhilaration And the ground is getting closer The wind is back But now it laughs with me And the ground is getting closer The parachute is too constricting I need to take it off And the ground is getting closer Without it, my wings unfurl Big, white, and powerful And the ground is getting closer I don’t want this fall to end So I flap my wings And the stars are getting closer
