Learning to Grow

He grabbed my wrist, fingers tight He spoke those words, voice low But loud enough to over power my own I felt the heat, lungs collapsing I held back the rage, I said, “No.” I felt it then, tears stung my eyes I looked over and saw no remorse That’s when I tried to leave I got up, opened the door with such force I glared at him, I said, “Go.” From that point on I was alone He called, he texted I didn’t answer him, won’t pick up the phone “I shouldn’t let him in,” they told me I nodded, I said “I know.” Months went by, I remained adrift Then I saw those eyes That’s when my mood started to shift The grays turned to amber and honey For the first time in a while I said “Stay.” He helped me fix myself He helped heal the wounds others caused He took my burdens unto himself He helped me learn to grow He kept me calm, said “It's going to be okay.” It's easier to act like the world is ending Than face your issues head on He helped me stop pretending That things were different then they truly were. He helped me confidently be able to say “I will not let my past define me. I will learn to grow, I will learn to heal. The more I love myself, the happier I'll be Whenever I see those amber eyes I see that I'm happy to live another day.” So now I thank him for his love For his care, for his patience, I swear he was a gift from above. And I will forever remember the words he said to me. I will never let this appreciate slip away.
