Learning to Love Again (After My Dad Died)

There was a time that it was dark, there seemed no room for love,

I lost my father here on earth, and the one above.

The clouds came rolling in, darkness covered my thoughts,

I didn’t know what to feel, all I knew was I was lost.

I continued on with my studies, at least I tried,

I continued on with my studies, even though he died.

Books, short-stories and mind numbing sentences, filled my brain to no end,

The words were floating around my mind, with nowhere to descend.

Then one day we studied poetry, at last I felt something real,

That one time we studied poetry, at last I felt I could heal.

The poems were so full of life, they showed me love again,

Even the poems about death, brought light through the curtain.

Tales of soldiers marching through gas, risking their lives for me,

The story of a wasted life, by a man only twenty-three.

These stories that seemed so bleak, were a ray of hope for me,

The people who wrote them cared so much, and at last I could see.

But the most important poems, were the ones about the cross,

These poems about Jesus showed me, that I am not lost.

I lost my father here on earth, but not the one above,

There was a time that it was dark, but now I’m filled with love.
