Legacy

Coming up young and black/

I was always told I was good for nothing/

But looking back on my heritage /

I must’ve counted for something/

A descendant of past great Nubian kings and queens /

The first Adam on earth the first race on the scene/

Brothers of strength sisters of grace/

A history of struggle a legacy of faith /

We built and raised the great pyramids of Akhenaten/

We slaved beneath the beating sun to pick the white man’s cotton/

From Harriet Tubman /

To Malcolm X/

To a prophet named king who had a dream/

From Marvin Gay/

To Tupac Shakur/

For a female rapper named Latifah,” Give it to EM Queen”! /

Looking back upon the legacy/

I’ve come from/

And the beautiful black man/

Of today/

I’ve grown into/

I was told I was good for nothing/

It’s not true, it’s not true.
