From the Lego House in the Basement

I am from the Lego house in the basement,

from the candy dish in the family room.

I am from Star Wars and Spongebob

(why just let the VHS tape and TV screen gather dust).

I am from "Turn the lights off when you exit the room"

and "Don't make me get the whip"

(threatening a child, it's child abuse).

I am from Super Mario Bros.,

from Christmas music in December.

I am from my dad losing his job,

getting a new job in Indianapolis,

and my parents calling each other every ten minutes.

I am from "we're here to make our grandchildren laugh".

I am from camping every summer with my grandparents,

from being called George

when clearly my name is Joshua.

I am from playing soccer,

not good at making goals, not good at protecting goals.

I guess I am just a mid-fielder.

I am from living next to a woods

(the raccoons know that my dog can't go through glass),

from being a Cincinnati Bengals fan

for Halloween.

I am from the silent movies of the past

that “will” be put on DVD before I’m one hundred.
