Less Alone
That single word echoed in the silence of the day
The sun beating down on my neck
Oh no
She wasn't supposed to answer!
I did the only reasonable thing for someone like me
I turned and I ran
But as I ran, I heard heavy breathing
Many steps behind me
I turned and saw you
A ghost against the desert landscape
You look almost dead
Shock floods my system
Anxiety kicks in
I never should have knocked
Never should have left that note
But you offer a tentative smile
In between rapid breaths
I look up at you from my sitting spot on the ground
"Are you her? The girl that lives there?"
I ask and I hope you say yes
Say that you get it
That you feel the same loneliness I do
Until you crumple to the ground before me
Are you okay?
Is it the shock?
Heat waves hit me but I don't care
Finally, even though we are both breaking down
I feel less alone
