Let it Be.
We perceive the world in pictures, colors and shapes
filtering out unnecessary red eyes, dark splotches and blemishes with
finger swipes and button presses
We can’t seem to let things be.
I come from the southwest- a Desert Dweller
Where tan lines run rampant, like swimming pools, like cacti
A world brimming with pictures and colors and shapes
Society boasts that a picture’s worth a thousand words
I pick up my own picture, hold it by the edges
Smooth out a crease where
the sun’s coming down, bright flare in the corner of the frame
I want this to generate a symphony
Let it be, let it be, let it be.
Without my filter, I am not a demographic
statistically inclined towards making lettered choices
Not darkening the frame to highlight Mexican heritage I’m “too white” to have
No sultry eyes, puffed out lips, low cut shirt
I wear my T-shirt and ripped jeans proud, a minimalist.
A picture’s worth a thousand words and my picture,
Unadulterated, Uncensored, Unfiltered
Is a story
Let it be, let it be, let it be.
It’s a girl in a T-shirt, no makeup
Standing in a field of wild flowers before the monsoon hits
A girl who sings in the car, likes peanut butter off the spoon
Dreams in bright colors and can’t stop making words and music
Life is a story, not a destination
And my body is a song
I want to stretch oceans wider than the imagination
And advocate the importance of stories and music to promote compassion
I want to create something that makes people feel
Because, aren’t we all born to make art?
You wouldn’t know it now- layers of selfies and snapchats
Degrading visual expression
when, there isn’t a formula for beauty, recipe for honest compassion
Compassion is a symphony.
We watch, snap, tweet, text, post- losing our image
Perpetuating the rarity of our authenticated, honest self
It’s one in a million.
Our horizons stretch into infinity, not limited by
perceptions of perfection and beauty
We are all songs and symphonies, stories of infinity
We can’t try hard to be ourselves- we just are
And our words and thoughts cannot be replicated
No posing, edits, filters can create raw human life
I smile, and that one shot is my
One in a million.
Unadulterated, Uncensored, Unfiltered
Let it be, let it be, let it be.
All of me
