A Letter to Diabetes

Dear Diabetes,

I wish they could see you.

They can see the finger pricks and the blood

But they can’t see the fear

You hold over me like a knife

And the late nights

I can barely move

because my sugar is so low.

But I must keep going.

They can’t see your constant nagging,

keeping me on my toes.

If I forget or try to ignore you,

the consequences will kill me.

So I must keep going.

There is pressure

To be a perfect daughter,

and student

and sister

But I must be a perfect diabetic

or I am doomed.

And I must keep going.

But you will not control me.

I will live my life.

Someday there will be a cure

And you will not hold me down.

I will keep going.

Sincerely,

Me
