A Letter from the Earth to an Earthquake
A letter from the earth to an earthquake
At 1.0 magnitude, I barely felt anything
Just a crush really
I mean
You’re poetic, I’ll give you that
You know how to move me
That’s what made me fall for you in the first place
You can paint new mountains against my landscapes and
Fill empty holes with fresh water
Move me like I’m the ebb and you’re the flow
3.0 Magnitude:
You raised your voice at me
Said I was only here to create you
We went out for dinner on Saturn afterwards
I forgave you
5.0 Magnitude:
I told you my secrets
Where I kept the oldest of building and the most peaceful of people
But you figured out how to break my spine
Threw your plates at the walls
And still thought you are creating a masterpiece out of broken glass.
6.0 Magnitude:
You keep trying to change me
Keep trying to get under my skin
Be my skin
You dig holes in me and say
“It’s just the Grand Canyon,
The Marianas Trench,
People will love it”
Don’t you think you’ve made enough holes?
Can’t you understand what you do is create catastrophes?
8.0 Magnitude:
This was full-on impact
I didn’t see it coming
Even though you’ve been doing this forever
I still can’t believe it
You hit me with landslides and crevasses
Death tolls
Tsunamis
Shadow zones
Blind thrusts
You made me think I deserved it
That I created it all by myself
Post- Shock:
I’m sick of being the ground you think you can pave over
You are nothing but a shift in my mood
A tectonic fault
I’m not shivering from pleasure anymore
You are clumsy,
self-centered
You think you are the core that holds me together, but I am a thousand times larger than that
There’s a reason they don’t name earthquakes
You were never worth naming
You were never able to hold these oceans together
