Letter from an Environmentalist

 Dear God,

Or, is it supposed to be Our Father? I was never quite sure

Just how, if you are up there

You’re not too sure about me.

After all these years, I just want to apologize

Not for my doubts though,

Since I’m still not sure who I am even talking to,

But for how we as a society have come to be.

We are supposed to live like water –

Looking for balance and sustaining life.

But we ourselves have become the slurry

That we create from our own destruction

Our greed has overtaken our primitive beauty,

And whatever has given us this wonder,

Whether an ethereal being or the luck of evolution

We have tossed it away in search of the latest craze

My point is that even though we may not be the destined care-takers

Or even the crown of creation as once thought,

We have left our irreversible, anthropogenic mark

And I am sorry.
