A Letter to Life

Dear Life,

You are a game I can never seem to win.

In the beginning, you seem so simple to endure and accomplish,

but growing older, I see I have been lied to.

You have a funny way of tricking me.

You feed me hope, yet I know

all I can return is disappointment.

Mistakes have been made,

and people have gotten hurt,

but no one worse than me.

You are the battle I never asked to fight.

While wounds may heal, some scars will never fade,

and your everlasting mark will stay for all eternity.

You are a blessing and a curse,

and you seem more like the latter.

Why do you affect me so greatly?

Why do you cause this pain?

When I breathe, my lungs are constricted by

the stories I have never told that latch onto my chest.

Oh Life,

why can you not leave me alone?

Release me from your grasp.

Let the pain and memories fade until all that is left is

the blackness that already surrounds my heart,

and my last breath is a simple whisper,

“Good bye.”
