Letter to Loneliness

Dear Loneliness,

I am an outsider,

And you are my only friend.

You sit by me at lunch,

Occupying the empty seat,

When nobody else would.

When visiting my house,

You would join me on the couch,

And we would watch movies together,

Just you and I

In deafening silence.

Like all friends,

You would invite yourself to my room

And make yourself at home,

Even when you're not welcomed.

But unlike most friends,

You're sinister and evil.

Because in the darkest nights,

When even the moon has abandoned me,

You say things that a normal friend with never say.

you whisper secrets in my ears,

Suggestions, facts, truths.

"You're alone..."

you croon with a sinfully sweet voice.

And you wait.

And you watch.

As cold, crystal tears cascade down my cheeks,

Dampening the pillow beneath my head.

You watch, unmoving,

With a cruel smile on your face,

As my grip tightens on my bedsheets

And my sobs become muffled.

Then you hug me,

In an attempt to comfort me,

But your embrace is like the frosty winter,

Leaving me colder and emptier than ever before.

Loneliness,

You are my only friend,

Who has stuck with me

Through thick and thin.

But I don't like you,

And I never once did.

I may have once mistaken you

For solitude and peace,

But I never will again.

So Loneliness,

This is my goodbye,

My farwell,

To your lies,

Your poisonous words.

You may have been my friend,

But never once have you regarded me as yours.
