Letter to my Dearest Daughters

As I play with your tiny toes and teeny hands,

I can’t help but think of the future at hand.

These little toes will soon walk,

In lands where all kinds of people talk.

All these people are different and similar to you.

This world is very complicated, and you will be too.

We all are complicated, with our minds filled with endless emotions

We also grow to have values and philosophies with such devotion.

In this world, there are many lessons to be taught,

But the loss of your innocence will be the cost.

You were birthed into a world, where the amount of melanin in your skin

Determines who you are but also what other people will think.

Some people like to assume who you are to be,

But don’t let frustration put shame on you to flee.

My beauty, you must strive for what you believe

And show them you aren’t who they think you are to be.

Some people can be cruel, their words cut, and actions leave you bruised

But don’t let them walk all over you or ruin your mood.

Rise above these weights that pull you down.

Don’t let their negativity cause you to drown,

Because you have a spark so bright filled with purpose.

It might be hard to see sometimes, but in the end it’s worth it.

You will find that through dark days there will always be light.

Just know that there is one shining in you, gleaming and bright.

You have voice, you have passion, you are the carrier of creation,

You are strong, you are beautiful, and the seed of a new generation.
