A Letter For My Dog

You didn't understand

When I left for school that day.

You watched me from the window,

As I slowly walked away.

You waited by the door,

For at least an hour or two,

Often checking out the window,

To see when I'd come back to you.

You didn't understand

When I left you for a week.

You thought you'd been abandoned

And refused to eat or sleep.

You slept upon my bed,

You paced along my floor,

Because you didn't know

I was on orchestra tour.

You didn't understand

When I left for sixteen days

On vacation with my family,

In the California haze.

You tried to run away,

So you could get to me,

But you didn't get too far,

So instead you howled your plea.

You didn't understand

When we took you to the vet.

You didn't even know

Your own skin was the threat.

You let me hold you tight

When I said my last goodbye.

They stuck the needle in,

And you heaved one more sigh.

You didn't know what happend,

I guess it just went black,

Just know I would've done anything

If I could get you back.

I hope you know I miss you,

I hope you're feeling free.

After all those times I left you,

Now you left me.
