To Lie Between Dawn and Dusk
Nothing is more peaceful
yet unidentifiably terrifying
than being awake at midnight.
Cars rushing home;
perhaps a teenager
rushing to make curfew,
or a clueless tourist,
making the long journey back home
maybe single mothers,
hoping and praying,
to kiss her babies to sleep.
Bedtime sounds;
fathers snoring,
children shuffling in their sleep,
a mothers tired breathe.
A garage door closing,
signaling the end of a long day.
While they all return,
to their warm homes,
I lie awake.
I lie until my eyes grow so heavy,
it becomes easier to fall deeply asleep,
but i lie awake.
I lie awake yearning for that text,
for that, "I miss you" text,
for that, "I shouldn't have left" text,
for that, " I need you back" text.
For that text i know is postponed,
for a lifetime I've yet to reach.
So while the world finds peace,
my heart, soul, and mind,
lie unsettled.
