Life

I told a girl once, I said, “please don’t cry”
And she looked back at me
With her wet brown eyes
And said “how can I not?
My body’s imperfect,
My soul is so hurt and
Am I even worth it?”

It pained me to hear
Self esteem so broken
Self loathing so severe
So severe she’d shed a tear
For every dance she wasn’t asked to
Makes her feel like its all true
That beauty’s on the outside

She taught herself to fall in love twice
And when both of those people were out of her life
She got lost for a little while
Wore her sunglasses at night
Woke up with her head in her hands
And shut the blinds to lock out sunlight

And when she made it out of bed
She’d assess the damage
And those bags beneath her eyes were full
Of baggage she couldn’t carry

And I tried to help her
Screamed, “can’t you see you’re
Drowning in the horrors of
Low self worth.”

And I slammed on the mirror
But I couldn’t break through the glass
And I helplessly watched my life
Slip right through her fingers.
