life changes

one look at the calendar and suddenly
time seems to be flying by.

the overwhemling nights dragging
through campus,
craving the embrace from a loved one
to help ease the worry of next morning's exam.

"just a few more weeks until break"

break comes and goes
always falling into the same routine

consumed by the urge to bury our
noses in a textbook,
only for a standardized exam to
determine the outcome of our future.

oh how simple the days used to be
when the biggest worry was what
to wear to school on monday

or who's parent was going to drive
the friend group to friday night's
football game.

but now student loans,
volunteer interviews,
and fall registration calls
for a mental breakdown.

applying for scholarships to
reduce the cost of each semester,
worrying about how to fund my
college education.

each goal seems to fall
further from reality.

the only constant is
the encouragement from
those who are my home,
my backbone,
the only thing that has not changed
in this trial we call life.

"you will get through this"
one blossoms, sprouts, grows,
subtle changes alter lives in ways unimaginable
but that is adulting, right?
