Life of a shadow

Once a long, long time ago, I stepped out in the blinding snow. A ray of darkness in a world of light, I was unaware of the eminent fight. A man took me by the arm, and I felt a twinge of harm. A woman of black is a disgrace to all that's pure in the human race. I tried so hard to separate, but what do I do when they segregate? I felt my heart stop beating twice, this hard man is just not nice. What am I but just a pawn? A woman in black treated as a fawn. Grief makes a mama do rasher things than a man with all his golden rings. This is my life and yes I'm black, but a shadow is always at one's back.

I embrace my heritage in this poem. I was born exactly 82 years after Rosa Parks. She is my inspiration for this poem. She was a strong ass woman. She did things that other black women in that time period, probably didn't even dare to dream about. She stepped up and she made a difference. For that I can ride a bus with white kids, I can get the lead role, and I can tell people what I think. If we hadn't fought for that right, I would probably be six feet under by now. She and all the others made a difference so very opinionated people like me, can make a difference, too.
