Life Veterans

Smile for the picture

Fix your hair and clothes

And noone will know

The storm inside of you

The thoughts whirling around

The pain stinging in your heart

It's been years,

yet you can't seem to get over it

The bloodshed,

The women pleading,

The children crying,

The boys disguised as men you saw dying,

The blood on your hands you saw running,

End up gripping your heart

You did it for your country

Yet you can't seem to get their help

You toss and Turn

can't sleep or eat

When you see blood,

breaths stop and grenades of memories bombard you incessantly

I wrote this poem after reading The Things They Carried in my AP English Language and Composition class last year. I feel as though the struggles veterans go through are not truly shown. I just hope that one day all people who serve will recieve the appreciation and help they deserve.
