Life is like walking
Life is like walking
Sometimes you move along at a steady, even pace
Sometimes you trip on your own feet but manage to stay standing
Sometimes someone is walking beside you, your hand in theirs
Sometimes you’re all alone, and you begin to feel low
Sometimes the path is straight and true
Sometimes the way twists and turns and snakes around
Sometimes the sun warms your skin
Sometimes the sky is overcast and gives you chills
Sometimes you’re on the sidewalk, the path clear and smooth
Sometimes you have to make your own path through the brush and weeds
Sometimes someone’s there encouraging your every step
Sometimes you just want to sit down and give up
Sometimes the incline proves a daring challenge
Sometimes the hill’s so steep you can’t see the top
Sometimes you’re in the shade, cool and covered
Sometimes you’re in the sun and the sweat drips down your face
Sometimes the way is familiar and predictable
Sometimes you don’t know what’s around the corner
Sometimes you’ve got the right shoes and your feet feel heavenly
Sometimes you’re barefoot and step on a stone
Sometimes the view is beautiful and you slow to enjoy it
Sometimes you’re on the shoulder, as the cars pass by too quickly
Sometimes the path is obvious and you continue on your journey
Sometimes you reach a fork, and must choose which way is best
Sometimes you think it will enrich your body
Sometimes you have blisters and every step is agonizing
Sometimes there’s a breeze and you get a breath of fresh air
Sometimes the wind is blowing the wrong direction
Sometimes you feel like running and skipping and jumping
Sometimes you step into a pothole and fall flat on your face
Sometimes you know exactly where you’re going and how to get there
Sometimes you go in circles, and begin to feel lost
Sometimes there’s a tunnel that reveals something new
Sometimes the descent goes so deep it leads to darkness
But when you reach the end, you’re home
