Life was hard when I
Life was hard when I was young.
A dad was just something other kids had.
It was a struggle for a mom with nine kids.
Some days were happy and some days were sad.
But mom did the best that she could.
The check from the state wasn't much.
I worked at Food town to help out with bills, clothing and food.
I bought my brother clothing so he wouldn't get teased at school
And I wore clothing that were in the donation box from our neighborhood to school
Wondering from day to day
If any of the kids would recognize
The clothes they had thrown away.
I helped out just to see a smile on my mothers face and my sister.
We didn't have new things to show off to friends,
But what we had was good enough.
We didnt have to welfare go to the food bank
Wondering from day to day
If any of the kids would recognize
The clothes they had thrown away.
I helped out just to see a smile on my mothers face and my sister.
We didn't have new things to show off to friends,
But what we had was good enough.
We didnt have to welfare go to the food bank
Had cook meals and no more going to bed hungry.
The cabinets finally had food and water
It took a lot to feed two kids,
But to complain, we didn't dare.
