Life's Journey

The sea of volcanic refuse passes under my feet;

The unblocked sun scorches everything that lives;

Silent, dry, endless and brown – not a soul in sight;

From every side - radiating heat;

My parched mouth yearns for water;

My hand holds my long-empty bottle;

My fear-gripped heart pounds;

My feet keep moving – but falter;

But look, look, ahead yonder!

See that green line? must be a river!

Feel the slight breeze!

Bringing sounds of life and joy and wonder!

I wanted to quit

I thought I would fail

But I fought my fears

And lived to tell of it.
