Lifesong
Gently stepping through the damp undergrowth,
These mist-kissed woods I witnessed eons ago,
Chanting my melody, my saga, my oath,
Its meaning we both still strive to know.
Flow, humble river- splash upon the shore of our remembrance.
Unravel, swaying leaves- unsheathe your stems; open my ears to your desire.
Spread, humble earth- reveal my journey, let my voice give guidance.
Caress, majestic wind- echo our lifesong in your ethereal choir:
“O, tell me of that one green child-
Who galloped upon emerald grassy-flaxy brush,
Scraping knees against gravel and moss-ridden wild,
Sojourning ancient lands mystic and lush.”
Resting against stern musty oak, I watched your delicate fingers sway,
Another whistle, another reminiscent note-
Has your enchanting melody always sounded this way?
Lifting the paper-thin leaves of our past, another stanza we wrote.
“With charring-blinding bursts, jagged scars stretched on inky-murky chasm,
Molten pillars stretched, icy-hot shards of screeching flame delighted,
Shrill laughter resonated from the flame- as the Earth began to spasm.
Yet... the child did not move. The green-child could not move. His world had ignited.”
Pushing my hands against your warm, crumbly bark I felt for a foot-hole,
And I began to climb up your arm, solemn and strong,
I listened deeply to the rhythm of your luminous soul,
As I once again remembered our nostalgic song.
“And so the green-forest was crushed and seared,
And so was the green-child, his heart set ablaze, his love disappeared,
He traveled the endless world for many years, star-lit nights and sun-bright days,
Until finally, his love had brought him back here.”
And so the green-man, embraced the reborn forest.
And so the green-forest embraced the reborn child.
