The Lights

With blinding white lights that shroud my being,

I stare at the lone figure standing before me;

Watching intently for my sign to begin.

Nervousness flutters throughout my body when I steal a glance behind that lone figure.

Hundreds of nameless, faceless beings’ gazes bore through my skin.

I fight the urge to squirm; and worse, to take flight.

Those beings watch my fellow performers and me with meticulous scrutiny.

Waiting patiently for the most minuscule mistake;

For one infinitesimal error.

As the lone figure’s hands raise, our journey begins.

A hundred voices ring out, strong and true;

Bringing the faceless with us on our expedition through the mystical words the flow from our voices.

Complete and utter silence fills the cavernous room as our performance ends.

This stillness, however, is only momentary.

It is rapidly replaced with a roaring thunder.

The beings in the distance that were once faceless now have expressions of awe and glee painted on their faces.

Their hands come together in applause for our tremendous effort.

Waves of relief wash over me once I take my leave.

After weeks of preparation and dedication, we have accomplished our goal.

And escaped, with our lives.
