Linger

No matter what we love,

we can not linger.

A soft touch,

the brush of a finger.

the heat of the day or the darkness of the night,

we can not stay as our hearts take flight.

A soft cry from the mist, your fingers curl around my wrist.

A catch in your breath, a silent tear

as another cry is called, our eyes become smeared,

there is nothing to do but let go,

for we simply can not linger.
