Lion Smiling

The feline bares his teeth

As he stretches to show sharp claws

Eyes narrowed and golden

And I swear I hear him laugh

Why does he toy about

When the fiend knows he's caught his prey

Eyes dart about in a panic

As the poor beast gives a shallow bleat

Hooves pound the ground

And claws dig into flesh

Red wine poors down

As a white muzzle paints itself red

Gold fur is darkened

The sky fades as the light does

The eyes roll back

And the beast falls dead

And that creature smiles up

His fangs flash as he snarls

And then he laughs

And I know it to be true

Why does he mocks the death

When he is just another in this life

Why stand above when he could easily sink below

Dirt covers his paws

But one day it will cover his bones

Cruel irony

Or simple truth

I wonder bitterly

As the sun sets

And the tires roll

And the birds cry

While the lions roar
