Little Birds

You were born with five others

A baby among your brothers

I thought I could save all of you

But after one day, we were down to few

Then after 2 days, there was only us

Your brothers scarred from the gust

The gust of wind

That ruined all of the unsinned

The first day you were alone

I tried to save you as my own

I pried your tiny beak

To let the water leak

For you were only a baby

I thought you were gone, maybe

But then you opened those little eyes

We all released sighs

You would be okay I thought

At least a couple days we fought

Every day we were together

Even through cold weather

I set a light to keep warm

And washcloths in your dorm

The day your first chirp was heard

You seemed like a real bird

Like you were going to fly away someday

Everything would be okay,

You opened your beak and asked for food

You had a way of putting me in a good mood

I felt strangely like a mother I never wished to be

But you leaving, I never wanted to see.

He said don’t get attached

I thought we were the perfect match

It had been a week now

I would take care of you, I vowed

But there came a day

That I could not stay

But I knew I could not leave you behind

So I resigned

To bringing you with

After being thoroughly convinced

It was July

No clouds in the sky

I set you up on my lap

I watched you slip into a nap

I wanted to hide you

Save you from an evil few

But I knew the decision to bring you was wrong

And now I wear that guilt like a song

Stuck in my head

While you stayed in your bed

I found you then

You were supposed to grow, when

I am so sorry everyday

I hope you are soaring high today
