Little Red Fruit
They think I'm crazy
I don't doubt
Because tomatoes are what I'm about
Why do you like tomatoes?
Why do you need this?
Simply because tomatoes give me bliss
I’ve grown up eating them
Is what I say
And I’ve liked them since the first day
Grand pa’s garden was the place
I had my first bite
And from that moment on, this little red fruit never left my sight
I love the memories that they bring
From childhood to yesterday
And even when I was asked to prom with a tomato bouquet!
Now that tomato bouquet is no lie
You are free to believe what you want
But when I saw it, I was not nonchalant
I love the glossy color
I love the tart taste
I’ll never let one go to waste
Family calls me the “tomato girl”
Friends laugh at my affinity
But I guarantee, I’ll smile if tomatoes are within the vicinity
But more importantly
Why do I need fruit?
Why did this girl write a poem about something with a root?
Tomatoes have come to be my symbol
As weird as it may be
It is a part of who I am along with all the unique things about me
I am proud of who I am
Every strength and every flaw
Tomatoes are just one, big piece to my own jigsaw
Without tomatoes, a part of me is different
I wouldn’t be the same
Perhaps some other fruit would replace my beloved nickname
Whatever the case, I’m sure I’d be happy
But for the time being
It is something red and round I will be eating
They think I’m crazy
I don’t doubt
Because tomatoes are what I’m about
Something wrong with this poem?
