Little Sister

Dear Sasha,

I used to stand like a rose, but bent over,
Still not upright, but in clutch of a clover,
As numbers climb, your life will fly by,
Do not let that scare you, for you won’t then die,
They say “accept” then “don’t settle”, “Relax” and then “live”,
Sorry, but that’s not the advice I will give,
Don’t listen to them, just let it fly by,
There’s no one solution to life; but nice try,
The truth of it all is that no one is certain,
You are not alone if you pull back the curtain,
Take risks if you want, stay home if you please,
Pay no mind to expectations that rid you of ease,
You are on the same level as teachers and teens,
Your voice matters, there are never any “queens”,
Trust in yourself, in people, you’ll be fine,
Put it in your pocket, then bring it out to shine,
Anxiety comebacks? C+? Maybe sports?
With the peak of every doubt, there’s still trust in your shorts,
Smile in the face of doubt and it will perish,
Eventually the rough spots you will learn to cherish,
Your life is ahead, and I’ve got your back,
Just eat, sleep, and laugh; oh, and don’t do crack.

I wrote this poem as a summary of a note I wrote once to my little sister advising her about high school.
