Lonely Days

Today’s a lonely day,
For it seems I’m on my way
To a funeral that wasn’t meant to be.
This man was more than Dad to me
He was teacher
He was preacher
He was mentor
And his kindness went from ceiling to floor.

However, all this is no more.
That day contained the gore
That will haunt my days forevermore.
It seems as if I dream
And he’ll walk in with his eyes agleam
But I know it not to be true.
For this is the fault of you.

You stand here beside me,
Nice suit and hair all wily
Telling me you’re sorry.
Tell to the lonely girl on nights starry.
Tell that to the girl without her father,
Who is crying to her mother.

All this because you did not look,
You did not think twice.
You pulled into the next lane
And thought it quite nice.
You noticed a bump
And then a thump
And knew you’d done something wrong.
Dad on his bike
Kid on her trike
They learned to ride together.
But now he is lost,
All because a second look couldn’t be tossed.
