The Lonely Mile

He walks down the road

a road filled with nothing.

The path is dark

and the shadows ebb with sadness

he did not choose to walk this road;

he has to.

Why does he walk?

because he knows he can finish.

He may not see the light at the end,

he may be engulfed in darkness,

but he is not blind.

He will make it through

with a small glimmer of hope in his heart;

it will light his path.

He will see it through to the end.

With each step heavier than the last

he trudges on.

He is unsure of where to go

afraid of the cracks

and the doubts that permeate his thoughts.

He has faith,

faith in himself.

That’s all he needs to guide himself onward

and to ward off the doubts.

The wind feels empty

pushing him back,

but he does not submit.

He is filled with courage,

courage to face what lies ahead

to thrust forward

This is what he’s made of;

that's what it takes to finish the lonely mile.
