Long

The wilderness is alive

a holy place of presence

Deep within the forest

My hard countenance softens

The trees witness

The ground below

The ethereal rising above

Millions of connections

That we might never know

Remember the long days

A longer stretch of road

The one we discover

By walking on quietly

Over stones

Through mountain paths

Braving the cold, wet caves

Seeking a secret of safety

Though we might be alone

It is adrenaline-driven

To walk out to peace

But imagine it this way

We lost something in the forest

We brought something back

We are tired

We are frustrated

We are angry

We are breathing

We are loving

We are letting go

The hard questions

We take back with us

For faith in tomorrow

Planting a tiny seed

It may not blossom

In my remaining days

And after I’m gone

BUT it might heal

Someone who is lost

Someone whose pain I evidence

In their cold, half-smiles

Sometimes we are hard to love

This is not our dismay

There are moments

That hold you up

Until you’re standing on your own

You might find yourself

rolling down hills

Incomplete and beloved

A song of long suffering

Whose lyric is engraved

On the stones of the deep

The meaning we discover

The meaning of these long days

I am a poet who has been writing since the third grade. It’s like creating another world in the midst of trying to understand this one.
