A "long shot"

The voices tell me I won't succeed
because I was never meant to.
So I strive to disprove the ancient of all ancients,
the tall-tale belief
that circumstance defines who you are,
predicts where you will not go,
and checks each passing breath
to ensure that the sweet sugary sensation of success
lingers not on your lips.
They tell me every day
that my music will take me nowhere,
that a practical 'day job' would suit me
and that a performer's life would strip me
of my senses,
leaving me beaten down at the bottom of the black abyss
that once claimed their lives and will soon claim my own.
Well, I would rather wallow in the eternal regret of a career's failure
than perish because I had never bothered to indulge in the passion of pursuing a dream.
