Long Shot

I am a long shot

or at least that’s what I was taught.

Now, before you go off on me saying

“I’m worth more than I’m thinking”

Let me tell you the story

My Mom was told that their was a 10% chance of becoming pregnant

and even though her faith seemed a little stagnant

her God proved the doctors wrong.

Now, in her heart, there’s a song!

Guess what? I even have a brother who, although annoys me alot,

we are both long shots,

but that's not where the story stops

I started school and they introduced me to letters, sound, verbs, consonance, and nouns

none of it made any sense,

but I was a smart little girl who learned to condense.

All this information committed to memory,

trying so hard, but reading became an enemy.

This everyday battle

that made my mind rattle

hoping that reading wasn’t important enough to matter.

I was wrong

and I knew that this was a real long shot

I wanted to give up

but I found a shortcut

That kinda open the door that was almost shut.

When the letters on a page begane to frustrate

I’d look at the picture and start to manipulate.

I know I did this because my mom said that I saw a word that started with an S beside

pictures of a school, I simply knew the word had to be school, but since she took away

the support the same six letters became strawberry.

Soon, I took my first pictureless reading test

and my score didn’t turn out like the rest.

I didn’t notice it at first,

the computer misspelled my name and that’s the worst

I had an outburst

of laughter and called the teacher over to see

that someone had left off the E.

I’m thinking who in the world could that be?

Then she pointed out my score had been a zero

and my confidence level became a little shallow

My Mom knew that I was smart,

but in her heart

she thought

something isn’t working the way it ought

We went to get me tested

and the results turned out as expected

I had Dyslexia, dysgraphia, coordination disorder, anxiety, and depresion.

Mama had found the answer as to why I was struggling

the teachers and the doctors said,”I’m sorry, but she may amount to nothing”

My mom refused to believe I was just another statistic

Her view on this was optimistic

because she knew my characteristics

I couldn’t spell at all, but I sure was artistic

We saw professionals, specialist, concealers, and teachers.

Quickly, I started to become a dreamer

My reading score began to climb

all the up to a 539

Now, with my ACT English score of 29,

I plan to teach kids how to shine

because , each of them will blossom in their own time

Everyone my believe this kid needs to be forgot

Remember,  sometimes it’s worth taking the long shot
