Look Into Yourself

Dancing in shoes that suffocate and bruise

Leaving your toes with an aching burn

Fire never screamed so loud before

I thought your flesh would burn

I guess the air used it as light, those stage lights were blinding

I wanted you to say something

Anything that would give me inspiration

But only your face spoke to me

It said the attention felt so good you decided to ignore the pain

It dug a hole so deep instead of listening to yourself

Your ears heard static syllables

You were singing a song but I could not relate

I was too busy trying to escape from the poisonous gas

That came from your throat

It was killing my dream of ever being loved for my mind

You see, I’m trying to melt these chains

This world has locked them so tight

I don’t want to be looked at as someone’s toy

Easily broken and misused

Treated like a fetish only until something new comes along

You know, singing those same verses

They seem to hunt so many

Because they follow the same characteristics that abuse and misuse

You would think that dirt stains were something you would wash off

And be too shameful to show, but no

It’s something that you love to flaunt

Desired by damaged minds

You inspire thoughts that shred lives

Terminate the value of a wedding ring

And scar good hearts that used to cherish

Now they wear bandages of insecurities

Wrapped in many reasons on why they don’t want to be bothered

You wear that mask

Sometimes it scares me to look

You seem to have so much pride

You forgot the cries

The struggles to be released from them snakes

Always lurking somewhere breaking the breaths

Of those who fought but could not break free

You've worn it for so long

You don’t realize or bother to even take it off

Children know every chime of your song

And listen to it before they go to sleep

Knowing every hymn filling their minds with bad advice

Before they even got a chance to clearly know what’s wrong from right

Words with a beat sung with notes that sink into our ears

And whisper these things that stay on repeat

Does nothing but cause more teenage pregnancy and HIV

Some pretend like theirs no such thing sweep it underneath the rug hidden

But the smell is so foul you would have to not breathe to not tell

Look into yourself! apparently something must be wrong

If the only thing you seem to have wisdom about is what happens

Behind closed bedroom doors

Realize and hear the cries of an aching body being destroyed

When will you stop entertaining your demons and posing for the flashy lights?

They blind your eyes every time you force yourself to smile

When will you stop robbing yourself of every strand of dignity?

When will you stop lying?

Thinking that you got the popularity vote because you can hit a high note

No, the cameras are always too focused on your bosom

Telling the world what you represent and what you are not afraid to show

They give prostitutes and bad rep but the only difference between

Them and you are the videos and the sold concerts

Selling the same package wrapped in gift wrap

With a golden ribbon sold in stores

Telling everybody this is what you want and who you should want to be

You go and put on your makeup

Your heels your outfit

Sing your soul out to your demons

Who want to see you strut around a stage

Showing your secret temple, yelling, screaming, shouting your name

Like they knew you from birth

When will you stop and start helping me melt these chains?

You keep tightening them aren’t you tired of being their camera slave?

Look into yourself and find the strength to inspire minds

And not destroy the value of what was created to produce life

But no matter what you do I still will continue to melt these chains
