Looking at My Mother's Daughter
Location
She's not tall and She's not Short.
She's not perfect, what did you expect?
She's simple and plain. She's also very
sensitive. Don't harm her, she'll break.
She cries behind her ex-boyfriend's back.
What did you expect, She's not perfect. She's
like any other person that you've met. She
tries to hide her face so that people won't
see her. Haven't you noticed she's not
perfect? When would be the day when you
notice my mother's daughter, not by how she
looks but for what she is?

Writing a shallow, superficial poetry analysis is probably the most common mistake students make. Go beyond simply describing the story and the theme of the poem. Try to guess what message the author intended to bring across, what they really meant when using the description of natural phenomena or inanimate objects.
