Lost Boy

Dear Harrison,

It’s the beginning of freshman year

We are each other’s helping hand and ear

To turn to when things hit the fan

Because high school is just like damn…

You broke up with a girl who caused so much pain

You had been with her since the beginning of eighth grade

At the time I was trying to make a name for myself

And do right by all without any help

But as the school year progressed

I started to turn into one real, big, mess

Thankfully you were a friend who could always tell

And you wrote me a letter that read, “Give ‘em hell”

Harrison you didn’t realize that was my saving grace

In a time when I wanted to completely erase

Everything I had become and everything I knew

To hide the pain others were putting me through

The constant drill of their voices never left my head

Telling me I was worthless and not listening to a word I said

It was your voice that encouraged me

To not let their cruel words define who I was meant to be

We managed to make it to the beginning of sophomore year

We had so many late night calls that ended in tears

But we slowly grew farther and farther apart

As we both were reaching for a brand new start

It got to the point where you needed me again

Because you knew I was a real, true friend

Who would stand with you through your hard time

Simply and always at the drop of a dime

Soon after I got together with your boy

And you started falling for girls who treated you like a toy

Harrison you were always a constant in my life

Who got me through every single strife

Junior year went by in a hot, white flash

I wish I would’ve known about that crash

That was about to come and kill the era

Of the person who always wiped up my mascara

You see Harry, you never got the full story

Since the breakup with him was so completely gory

And I get why you totally took his side

I mean even I know, bro code is based on pride

Senior year hit and we haven’t talked

I’ve wanted to call but my number is blocked

I want to tell you how things have gotten better

Instead I’ve gotten into the habit of writing these letters

Letters to a friend that is no more

To a boy who I’d find on the bathroom floor

After consuming one too many party drinks

I’m not sure you have a clue as to what you think

You’ve become the person you said you would never be

I remember the young boy who wanted to be free

Of the raging thoughts inside of his mind

But this in turn made his soul so incredibly kind

Instead I write to a friend who’s gone

Someone I was once so dependent on

And you’ll never know that I just penned

The last letter, something I will never send

My dear Harrison I want you to know

I can see right through your elaborate show

Deep down I know there truly lives

A super sweet, blue eyed, dorky kid

To the person who wanted to be a rapper

And was totally obsessed with dressing dapper

Until you can find the voice you’ve tossed

You’ll still be a boy, forever lost

As for now I say goodbye

To you, my friend, I’d never lie

Trust me when I say things do get better

High school, after all, is not forever

I’ve given them hell just like you said

And really wish you’d clear your head

So we can go back to the way we were

A friendship so needed, loving, and pure
