Love
Love
Such a simple word
Four letters
One syllable
Yet it is the strongest word in the English language
Sure it gets tossed around
Messed with
Taken for granted
And even abused
But its meaning and value still hold true across the board
And I don’t mean love in the sense that it’s interchangeable with “like”
I don’t mean it in the sense of “I love pizza”
(Now don’t get me wrong, pizza is freaking delicious)
I don’t think the word “love” and “like” are synonymous
Because when you like something
More often than not it is spontaneous,
It is impulsive,
Typically effected by mood and situation
And generally not a lasting sensation
Love on the other hand…
Now that word has depth
And in all reality it should be a little scary,
Intimidating.
Because love has weight to it.
It implies commitment that lasts longer than a week,
Love overlooks the feelings of the moment,
Takes in a panoramic view of past, present, and future…
Love
It is one of, if not the, top music genres that range from 60’s classics to more modern beats
It is the one emotion that has a dedicated holiday
It has a mascot
It is the most pinned, tweeted, and shared topic within social networks
Love brings the chance of new life
While other have sacrificed themselves out of love
This is where the abuse,
Neglect,
And a very real misunderstanding of the word comes in.
People have a tendency to say love
when they really mean like
Whether for wanton gain
Or callous disregard
People say it and don’t mean it
Don’t have the intent that the word truly implies
For example, you don’t just like your child, spouse, or siblings
You love them
Even if you don’t like it
You will forever be a part of their existence
For better or worse you have touched their lives,
Impacted them and shaped them, in part, into who they are today
Some say that love blinds
I say right back, no, love does not blind.
Lust blinds
Greed blinds
Hate blinds
But love…
Love can rise above all of those,
Break through the dark clouds of grudges, heart ache, guilt
Love…
Allows for forgiveness
Can heal old wounds, ignored to the point of festering
Love…
Can hold a family together through the darkest of nights and the strongest of storms
Love…
Overlooks the flaws
Breaks down the barriers that separate
Love…
Can bring two people together to the point that only death could separate (and even then, who knows how long that will last)
Love…
Love is an amazing, wonderful, and down-right scary thing…
Love…
Love is what I have for you
Love is the one resource I can always offer you
When all else is spent
When I have long lost the ability to move or speak
When I prepare to breathe my last breath on this earth
Even then,
I will have love to offer you
Love…
In every sense
and meaning of the word,
I love you…
