Is This Love

The garbage can fills with flowers. They tell me this is love.

Handwritten notes, everything like a dream, the kind

You can’t wake up from. You sleep on the floor next to me.

The sun is rising. The door is cracked open.

There is something living inside your closet.

Tear off the closet doors. Ask it nicely to leave.

There is a white cat that only comes after dark.

In two years you will forget it’s existence. Close the blinds.

Tie your shoelaces, brush your hair. This is the way it goes:

You step outside, and the air is cold, the wind biting. You bite back.

Adjust your glasses. When did you stop looking me in the eye?

Last Wednesday? October? I carve my name on the back of your family portrait.

The room fills with light. You tell me this is love.

I tell you that you do not know love from a bouquet of flowers,

Tell you everyday is not Valentine’s, not a day of worship.

This is the way it goes: You stare at me across the classroom. I stare at my shoes.
