Love Comes Knocking

Love comes knocking

at the worst of times,

so, I never answer.

I’m always fearful

of what I might see.

Love knocks and knocks,

begging me to let

it in, but I don’t.

Instead, I sit

in silence, wishing

that love would leave.

Far too many times

have I seen the

evil side of love.

It’s toxic, like

swallowing acid.

The kind of love

that leaves your

mom crying on

the floor because

she just received

a black eye.

The kind of love

that drags your

sister out of the

house kicking

and screaming,

weeping, begging

love not to go.

The kind of love

that forces your

aunt to attempt

suicide because

love just won’t

act right.

The kind of love

that turns your

own children

against you.

The kind of love

that makes promises

it doesn’t intend to

keep.

The kind of love

that degrades you

just because love

finds it funny.

So, love can

keep knocking,

I won’t be opening

that door anytime

soon.
