Love is a Five-Lettered Word
You are not like other lovers
You do not gift me blood-red roses or
dark chocolates in an effort to win my affection
You do not wield a charismatic smile
like a sword
Searching for the perfect opportunity
to pierce my heart
No, You're not like them at all
You do not trail fingers down my face
and whisper false promises in my ear
Gently leading me astray
You do not dangle intimacy in front of my eyes
then jerk it away each time I reach for it
Until I'm a begging mess at Your feet -
pleading for a desire you can never satisfy
No, You're not like them at all
You do not hand out crimson roses
Or rip out my chest
Because You don't seek blood nor destruction
You breathe words of Truth
and Life
For You have no reason to lie
You have nothing to hide from me
No, You're not like them at all
You know the intimacy I desire
You give it freely
Because You truly love me
All the dirty secrets I hide
All the ugly parts of my soul
All the things I wish to remember
All the things I hope to never forget
No, You're not like them at all
You love me completely
It has nothing to do with how good I am
Or what I could do for You
You love me because when You gaze into my eyes
You see Jesus
Hanging on a cross, dying
so I could have the honor of knowing You
No, You're nothing like them.
