A Love That Inspires

I am a witness to the most selfless love there is

I have seen it grow over my lifetime and let me tell you, it is magnificent

The magnitude of it amazes me everyday

Often times, it leaves me in tears

It leaves me speechless

It makes me question my worthiness, but it never questions if I am worthy

You see, it is not an ordinary love

It is the love my immigrant parents bestow upon me

It is the type of love you cannot not know unless you are the child of the immigrant

You cannot fully comprehend this love until you see your father breaking his back at a minimum wage job in order for you to grow

It is watching your mother clean another’s house for 20 some years so that you may have everything she never had, and more

It is watching your parents grow old in a country that is your home but not fully theirs

It is hearing your parents mourn loved ones in their living room because they cannot go back home

It is watching your mother bury her own mother through videos and photos while being 3,000 miles away

It is the unconditional and constant sacrifices they make everyday that prove to me what an authentic love is

How could it not be?

When they crossed borders, desserts, and rivers, for me

Without thinking it twice; without asking for anything in return

It is a love that inspires me to change to the world

To love every human and our planet with the same sacrificial love

Never wondering if someone is worthy, instead showing them by love, that they are
