Love for my Nani
I love you, Nani(grandmother in bengali)
Rushing river started to overflow
With each step, I felt miles away
And felt a part of me never was the same
Dear Nani, our distance will not change my emotions
A sun and a moon away
My Nani cries and weeps and I do nothing but the same
Birani (bengali food) coats my tongue and I smile
Looking up at the bright blue night her hair cascading down her back
It’s Bangladesh, it’s my home, it’s Nani, I love
Like the sun, her smile warms my earth
She is the star and light in my foggy world filled
with worries, pain, and confusion.
You are my fairy Godmother in the worst of times
The dark clouds cover the sky
The sun hides beneath earth and I cry
Leaving behind the dirt paths
Will walk in concrete streets
All for an education and a comfortable life
Would living in the Big Apple be worth years
of laughter, love, caring, and smiles of my land
আমি আপনাকে ভালোবাসি(I love you), Nani
