Love is Peace

I remember the butterflies,

Twisting and turning,

Causing my stomach to tingle

Every time I was near you.

I remember the feelings

How they started off small,

But slowly grew

To be something much more.

I remember the times

When everything disappeared

And it was just us,

Just the two of us

Living in the moment.

But that was all they were:

Moments

Brief periods of time.

Fleeting. Moments.

What began as a simple “Hello”

Turned into something more,

But maybe it was only me

Who felt it.

Because love isn’t just a feeling

Love is the actions you do

Love is the decisions you make

Love is the words you say

Even when the one you love isn’t there.

Maybe what we had

Was love to you,

But then

Does that mean you knew what love was?

I won’t lie,

The countless hours spent talking

The the laughs we shared

And the secrets we shared,

It was great.

But it was done through a screen.

It was a piece of you in the palm of my hand

A small window to your mind

But now I wonder

Was that the real you?

Or was it only a mask.

Because words travel

Faster than you could imagine.

And somehow

They made their way to me.

Those words you spoke

You filled them with venom

And spit them in my face.

Poisoning my heart,

And making me feel that it was me

Like it was my fault.

I was the bad guy

All because of my morals

Because I respected myself.

It was my fault.

Only it wasn’t.

I wasn’t wrong.

I wasn’t at fault.

You were.

You are.

Because you don’t know what love is.

Love isn’t making me feel special through a screen

It’s doing the little things

To show me how you care

It’s about making a fool of yourself

Because of the corny jokes

To show I’m worth a little embarrassment.

Love isn’t meeting in secret

Because you’re afraid to face my parents.

It’s about holding my hand

In a crowd of people.

It’s about being proud of my accomplishments

Because I’d come so far.

It’s about facing your fears

And shaking my father’s hand.

Love isn’t continuously lying to my face

Because you’re ashamed of what you’ve done.

It’s about being honest

Letting me know who I’m falling for.

It’s about being truthful,

Even if it might break my heart.

Because you can’t repair trust.

Love

It’s a four letter word

That stands for a feeling

But it’s so much more.

An action,

A thought,

A hug,

A kiss,

A note,

A picture,

A face,

Love is no one thing.

It’s a series of objects, people, and actions

That come together

And together

They give me peace.

Because that’s what love is.

Peace between two people

Peace to know that by being yourself

Is enough to the person you love

And for the person who loves you.
